Breakthrough #1: A proven way MZ fights oxidantion

We already knew antioxidants are good for eyes, but until now, no one had shown exactly how Meso-Zeaxanthin (MZ) works. A new paper in the journal Nutrire (2025, 50:78) changes that – it's the first to pin down MZ’s mechanism.

In lab tests, researchers used hydrogen peroxide to stress human retinal cells (ARPE-19)-a reliable way to mimics the kind of damage from blue light and eye strai. MZ stepped in and made a real difference: damaged cells bounced back, harmful MDA and ROS levels dropped, and vital antioxidants like T-SOD and GSH-Px got a boost.

What's more, the study found that MZ actually turns down the volume on certain genes in the MAPK signalling pathway (ERK, JNK, p38 MAPK).  This means MZ does not merely neutralize free radicals, it prevents cellular damage at the source, offering comprehensive retinal protection through this specific signaling pathway.

Breakthrough #2: Solving Bioavailability.

Meso-zeaxanthin is ipophilic, which poses challenges in solubility, stability, and absorption. To overcome this, INNOBIO applied its proprietary caroblast™ microencapsulation technology to create a highly bioavailable MZ microcapsule powder.

Studies using a Caco-2 cell model that simulates digestion showed that microcapsulated MZ had 3.6 fold higher cellular uptake than unencapsulated MZ. This improvement is due to the technology's ability to form nano-sized particles with excellent water dispersibility, which facilitate passage across the intestinal epithelium, while the protective wall material shields MZ from oxidative degradation in the GI tract.

The same effect was confirmed in vivo in SD rats. Microencapsulated MZ powder increased peak plasma level by 64.6% and total absorption (AUC0-24) by 33% compared to the unprocessed MZ . Importantly, the research found no selective absorption among zeaxanthin isomers, confirming that the microencapsulated formulation performs as intended.

Breakthrough #3: Patented Synergistic Formulations

Two new patents cover novel formulation methods that unlock the synergistic effects of lutein and zeaxanthin.

The first patent covers a formulation with a mass ratio of lutein to zeaxanthin of 1:(1.5-2.5), mirroring the pigment composition of the human macular. This specific ratio creates the optimal synergy between blue light filtration and antioxidant defence, with the optional inclusion of perilla seed oil.

The second patent addresses the industry challenge of oil-free lutein ester microcapsules. It establishes a lutein-to-zeaxanthin mass ratio of 1:(0.8-1.5) (e.g., 1:2), ensuring excellent product stability and preventing the floating and sedimentation issues often seen in conventional formulations. This solution is ideal for diverse applications, including dietary supplements, functional foods, and nutraceuticals.
