In the digital age, with widespread exposure to blue light exposure and increasing eye strain, vision protection has become a major priority. Responding to this need, INNOBIO's MariGuard® brand announces three significant research advances focused on Lutein and Meso-Zeaxanthin (MZ), setting a new standard for scientifically supported eye health solutions.
1. Revealing the Potent Antioxidant Capacity of Meso-Zeaxanthin
Scientific literature has established MZ as a core component of macular pigment, essential for central vision. Recent research by INNOBIO, published in the international journal Nutrire (2025, 50:78), provides unprecedented cellular-level evidence of its powerful antioxidant mechanism.
Using a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress model in human retinal pigment epithelial (ARPE-19) cells—which mimics damage caused by blue light and fatigue—the study demonstrated that MZ:
·Significantly increased the viability of damaged cells.
·Reduced levels of the oxidative damage marker, including malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
·Enhanced the activity of key endogenous antioxidant enzymes: Total Superoxide Dismutase (T-SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px).
·Inhibited cellular damage by downregulating key proteins in the MAPK signaling pathway (ERK, JNK, P38MAPK).
These findings confirms MZ's dual role: it not only neutralizes existing free radicals but also proactively strengthens the retina's intrinsic antioxidant defense system.
2. Microencapsulation Technology: Increasing Bioavailability by 3.6x
High efficacy depends on effective absorption. To overcome the natural challenges of lipid-soluble MZ—such as poor water solubility and low absorption—INNOBIO has achieved a breakthrough with microencapsulation technology.
Research using the Caco-2 cell model, which simulates human intestinal absorption, showed that MZ microcapsules achieved a 3.6 times higher cellular uptake rate compared to unprocessed MZ crystals. The technology enhances water dispersibility and protects the compound from oxidation in the digestive tract.
These results are further supported by in vivo studies in SD rats, in which the MZ microcapsules demonstrated a 64.6% higher peak plasma concentration and a 33% greater overall absorption (AUC0-24) than the unprocessed form. Critically, the research confirmed no selective absorption bias among different zeaxanthin isomers in humans, ensuring the supplemented MZ effectively reaches the eyes.
